The Straight Talk LG Optimus Phone makes my husband happy

My husband finally made the switch to Straight Talk prepaid wireless. Our dependence on a cell phone contract is over. The amount that we paid was never the same from month-to-month. Not knowing what to plan on was a real hassle. The basic bill for his plan around $90 per month and cost overruns were frequent. Thanks to his switch to Straight Talk Wireless, he now pays $45 plus tax for unlimited talk, text, 411 and data.

Guess what held him back from joining me on the prepaid bandwagon?
It was the uncertainty of getting a smart phone that he would like or that he couldn't keep his old number. I had good news for him on both counts.

Straight Talk has added a bunch of mobile phones in the past few months. I recently purchased an LG Optimus Q™ with a slider. It uses the Andriod system which takes some getting used to. My husband played around with it and decided he liked the Google Maps and navigation, virtually unlimited phone book and some of the other features. That's when he decided to bite the bullet and pony up for a new smart phone.

Traditional wireless companies charge you almost nothing up front and make up the cost by locking you into a two year contract. Insurance is usually available for an additional monthly fee.

Prepaid plans mean that you buy your cell phone up front so getting started is a little pricey. Straight Talk offers an insurance plan on the phone that covers breakage and spill. It's only $15 for the life of your phone. That's a steal when compared to $5 every month.

The LG Optimus was $179.00 with tax and insurance from our local Wal-Mart. It will take about 4 months of savings on the new plan to offset the cost of the new phone. We're estimating a yearly savings of around $500 once the phone cost is offset. That's an extra $41 per month that I can use for gas, groceries or for doing something fun.

I wrote about his possible cell phone upgrade previously and am very happy that he made the switch. Porting his number was easy-peasy. Downtime was less than five minutes. His enjoyment of the phone is obvious. My husband is cheerfully downloading new apps to his mobile phone as I type. Switching to Straight Talk or any other prepaid plan won't get any better than that.
