Cell phone upgrade

I finally bit the bullet and bought an LG smart phone from Straight Talk. It's is on the unbeatable unlimited plan. Adjusting to the android system is hard but otherwise the cell phone is pretty good.

The nice thing about Straight Talk is that it's a prepaid plan. You buy a card every month or pay online. Another option is to have the payment deducted from your bank account by debit card each month. Depending on your needs, you can get a limited plan for $30, unlimited plan for $45 (my choice) or an international plan. Contract-free living gives you the ability change your usage or cancel at any time or every time.

The cost savings is significant. My husband is on a traditional phone plan. He pays about $90 per month, has no internet and has a text message limit. With tax, the Straight Talk phone costs me about $50 bucks each month. The service is excellent and both data and text are unlimited.

The downside is that you have to buy the phone up front. Purchasing the LG set me back about $170 with tax and insurance. It would have cost less initially to buy the smart phone as part of a contract. However, it would have locked me in for two years and would have cost more overall. That's not a good financial decision when you're downsizing expenses.

I'm very pleased with Straight Talk and will be saving money with them for a long time to come.

  1. I think buying your phone up front is the wave of the future--It is what we did with our T-Mobile phone and it works really well

  2. I agree with you, Audrey. A lot of people are making the switch. Why pay more than you need to?
